Caring for the animals, the land, and the people making our clothing

We've loved wearing wool for thousands of years. According to IWTO, The International Wool Textile Organization: “humans have been washing, weaving, and wearing wool since 10,000 BCE.”

When considering the use of wool to create long-lasting fabrics, vegans and environmentalists may argue that it’s not sustainable.

Yet wool is a natural and organic fiber and when made ethically, is one of the most earth-friendly fabrics for many reasons. Wool has a long lifespan and is also biodegradable. Alongside, sheep are part of the natural carbon cycle. When sheep consume organic carbon in plants, that carbon converts into their wool.

Some facts about wool according to IWTO:

  • "Wool products have long lifespans, meaning they are used or worn longer than other textile fiber products.

  • Wool textile products tend to be washed less frequently at lower temperatures which has a lower impact on the environment.

  • Wool is readily recyclable.

  • Wool biodegrades on land and in water – as a protein-based fiber, wool does not contribute to microplastic pollution.”

Of course, like any product, there are many layers to how it's produced. Brands must take responsibility for setting these standards. That's why I was so excited to feature Bellemere NY. They create sustainable, direct-to-consumer wool, and cashmere.  Bellemere’s 100% hand-made coats are not only made to last for years but also made with intention. Bellemere NY manufactures with a textile company that has passed many international certifications. These certifications grant them the sustainable and ethical mark of approval.

Below are a few of the certifications and what they mean:

  •  The Responsible Wool Standard: a standard set for farmers. This standard ensures the wool comes from farms taking the extra care for the land and animals. Making sure there are ethical and holistic approaches in everything they do.

  • The Good Cashmere Standard®: focuses on the care of the goats that cashmere comes from. Along with the “economic, social, and ecological conditions experienced by cashmere farmers.” The standard is a foundation for sustainable manufacturing of cashmere.

  •  The International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare (ICCAW): a non-profit organization in China. It’s dedicated to educating on animal welfare. Implements animal-friendly farming systems and improving the quality and safety of livestock products.
